FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Martial arts and athletics are respectively the best ways to arm your child with embodied and social self confidence. BJJ is the perfect blend of those practices, your child will learn discipline and accountability but also work up a sweat while having fun with their friends as they practice the fundamentals of BJJ movement and technique. They will learn from some of the area’s best and most passionate practitioners.

As they grow into their BJJ, they will have the opportunity to challenge their skills and personal growth with our children’s competition team. We offer classes for children 4-8 & 9-14. For Children 14+ please reach out to learn about our opportunities for teens.

  • No. We cannot emphasize this enough, NO.

Don’t be the person setting benchmarks in their life based on hypothetical fitness.

BJJ will make you fit. So many of our members have committed themselves to this sport only to realize significant personal and physical gains. All we can say is come in and start training. It might not be easy but it will be worth it!

  • Come in and watch a class. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport based on ground fighting and submission holds. We think it’s good for all beginners to set themselves up for success by seeing what that looks like. Feel free to introduce yourself to the instructor before or after class and ask questions. We are here to help!

Any of our Level 1 Technique classes are where you will need to begin your journey.

Our fitness classes are also designed to compliment our grappling program so if you're feeling overwhelmed by the physicality of BJJ, add a strength & conditioning class to your schedule. Stay committed and you'll be impressed by your progress in a month.

  • If you are a new student with no prior experience we ask that you attend at least 24 classes prior to leveling up. That way we know you have the needed fundamentals to properly enjoy that higher level of training. See our schedule to see how our class gauge system works.

  • Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is practiced in two formats. One occurs in a traditional martial arts outfit known as a kimono or Gi and the other is practiced in normal athletic wear.

In Gi BJJ you will build a game off of grips and grip manipulations such as lapel & sleeve controls to sweep or set up submissions. When you sign up at Baltimore BJJ, you will receive a complimentary Gi, we will help you find the perfect fit and we're always happy to give suggestions on good beginner Gi's.

In NoGi BJJ, also known as submission grappling, grapplers should wear t shirts, shorts, rash-guards or leggings (known as spats) to class. This style of BJJ tends to be faster paced as you are not slowed down by grips or the friction of the Gi.

As a beginner we encourage you to try and train both!

  • Yes.

Our instructors are available to teach one on one or small group private lessons but we would recommend that you come in and train for a few months before starting one on one coaching. Each of our experienced instructors has an area of expertise andstyle in their own personal practice, you will want to train under the coach that matches your own physicality and goals in the sport.
